James and Kim Walker have known Scott Godfrey before he started Lacrossing Barriers.
“We have known Scott since he was a volunteer at AAFS (Autism Aspergers Friendship Society),” said Kim.
“(Our son) Logan played lacrosse with Scott at AAFS and loves playing sports with Lacrossing Barriers (LB) with Scott specifically.”
In addition to lacrosse, there was a boxing session through AAFS that Logan enjoyed.
He took private classes with one of the teachers and is now part of the Monday Night Boxing offered through LB.
One aspect of LB that the Walkers enjoy is how they’ve seen Logan grow as a young man through Scott’s teaching.
“It's teaching him responsibility, accountability … conflict management, those types of things,” said James.
“Acceptance and psychological safety are two things Scott is really good at maintaining. I would almost call those the foundation because that is how trust is built up and kids open up to him.”
Logan’s love and connection with LB extends far beyond attending programs.
“For his graduation from Calgary Quest, he had LB shaved into the back of his head,” said James.
Scott attended his graduation and was surprised to see it.
“He asked Logan if it was really LB,” said James with a smile.
Today, Logan attends LB daily and has made friends with many of the participants, staff and volunteers.
“He’s building a community for himself, surrounding himself with all these people,” said Kim.
“He is growing so much just from the time he spends with them.”
