Women’s Lacrossing Barriers (WLB) launched in March of this year in honour of Women’s History Month.
The 2024 Rally Report by Canadian Women in Sport reported that 63 % of girls aged six to 18 report participating in organized team or individual sport at least weekly, compared to 68% of boys.
This is a very encouraging sign as the 2020 report only had 18% of girls participating in sports.
However, there is still much room for growth and we want to be a part of that change.
“WLB is all about highlighting the women in LB — whether they’re staff, volunteers or participants — and also showcasing female athletes in lacrosse and other sports,” said Liz Arquiza, one of WLB’s founders.
Arquiza runs the WLB TikTok page along with Liv, another of our staff members.
To help promote WLB on our Instagram, we have enlisted the help of Rebecca Lee (Bex), a talented sport and tournament photographer from the GTA.
In the month of March we had the WLB Bring a Friend initiative, inviting members to bring a female friend or family member to enjoy Friday Night Lacrosse.
In May we went to our first tournament in Edmonton (the GELC Icebreaker) and had a booth raising money and awareness for our women’s programming.
We have more WLB events coming up that we are excited for.
